_Two orthodox dioceses demanded the ban of the art exhibition curated by Marat Guelman in Krasnodar

As news agency RIA Novosti reported, two Russian Orthodox Church dioceses opposed the holding in the Krasnodar region of exhibitions curated by Marat Guelman.
The first exhibition “Icons” should be opened in the Krasnodar Regional Exhibition Hall on May 15. First the Stavropol and Nevinnomyssk Diocese opposed against the project. It’s Bishop Cyril appealed to the governor of the Krasnodar Territory Alexander Tkachev with a request to ban all activities of the Guelman in the region. On Friday, May 11, Ekaterinodar and Kuban Diocese joined to request.

Press Service of the latest published the statement, which notes that in the diocese persistently receives reports about the threat of destruction of the Kuban’s culture, which comes from a project of Marat Guelman. In the diocese report indicated that the name of Marat Guelman, “for the modern Russian Orthodoxy is a kind of negative measure.” From the message following that “where Gelman, there is evil, destruction and corruption of the soul.”

There is no reaction from the Krasnodar authorities yet. Guelman said in an interview that he is upset by situation, but he still hopes that the exhibition will open on time. (more…)

_Orthodox protest against the staging of “The Golden Cockerel” at the Bolshoi Theatre

Orthodox Christians have expressed their outrage with regard the staging of opera “The Golden Cockerel” at the Bolshoy Theater, deeming it is blasphemous.
“We want to express dissatisfaction with the production of “The Golden Cockerel” by director Kirill Serebrennikov. We think this staging is blasphemous in relation to the Orthodox faith,” – said in a statement of the believers group. According to the authors of the document, this production is directed “to the humiliation of Orthodox Christians.”
“The action takes place in public, using mass media. The director brings to the stage actors depicting caricatures of the Cossacks and Orthodox icons. “King” portrays the patriarch, swinging a censer. We can see a mockery of the shrines, the priesthood and the Russian Orthodox Church” – said in a statement. (more…)

_The exhibition of contemporary art “Homeland” in the Novosibirsk Museum was prohibited

As reported to Tayga.info director of the Siberian Center for Contemporary Art (SCCA) Anna Valentina Tereshkova, Governor of Novosibirsk region Vasily Yurchenko banned the exhibition of contemporary art “Rodina” in the Novosibirsk State Museum (NSM).

Recall that the exhibition “Homeland” by curator Marat Guelman was introduced first time in the Perm Museum of Modern Art in November 2011, when the organizers of the exposition accused of insulting religious feelings of Orthodox Christians. On May, 19 the exhibition was to open in the NSM, becoming the centerpiece of an international cultural event “Night at the Museum” and work up to June 17. On April 26, in the morning session of the Legislative Assembly, the Governor Yurchenko said that already made a decision about the exhibition, but did not specify what kind. (more…)

_The exhibition “Ukrainian body” in Kiev was censored

The group exhibition “Ukrainian body” opened at the Center of Visual Culture under the National University “Kievo-Mogilianskaya Akademia” (NaUKMA). The exhibition presents sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and video installations of Ukrainian artists and explores the corporeity phenomenon in contemporary Ukrainian culture.

After 3 days, at 10th of February, the President of NaUKMA Sergey Kvit visited the exhibition and claimed: “This is not an exhibition, this is shit!” Then he locked the gallery and took the key away. (more…)
